TUESDAY EVENING

Kenny Wiles did, in fact, surprise her by driving up in a shiny red Cadillac with chrome rims and a white rag top. The black slacks he wore fit him snuggly in the thighs, but the fabric bunched in between his legs as he waited beside the car like a broke down Superfly ready to pick up his bottom bitch. She noticed he’d gotten a fresh haircut, giving him a modified afro, with trimmed sideburns and a Van Dyke around his mouth. He wasn’t a bad looking fellow, but everything about him was slightly left of center.

“You look amazing,” he said as he opened the car door for her.

“Thank you, Kenny. You are looking sharp as well. I like the haircut,” she said as she slid by him to get into the car, which had white leather seats. The overpowering cologne he wore filled the chamber of the car, getting into her mouth and making her stick out her tongue like she was attempting to catch flies. A fine mist blew up from a car air freshener, decanting out a scent on its white billowing smoke.

“You alright over there, Doc?”

“No, I’m not,” she said coughing. Her eyes began to water, and she wasn’t able to catch her breath. The sneezing started next and before she knew it, she began to gag. “I have to get out of this car!”

“Doc, what’s wrong?”

“The air freshener,” she said, bending, landing her hands on her knees as she crawled on the sidewalk. “It’s too much.”

“I’m sorry,” he told her. “I’ll turn it off.”

“No, I need to take a few antihistamines,” she said, turning, coughing, sneezing as her eyes began to swell closed. “Oh, good Lord!”

Panic filled her voice as she grabbed for her phone, calling Jose. “Help...museum...now.”

He must have been close by, arriving minutes later to find her sitting on the sidewalk, pushing Kenny away as he tried to help get the lady to her feet. She was swatting at him, telling him to get away as snot and tears ran from the eyes which were swollen shut. A couple of people had started to gather around, increasing her embarrassment.

Jose, disturbed by her rapidly changing appearance yelled at his friend. “Good grief, what did you do, Kenny?”

“She’s having an allergic reaction to the car misting air freshener,” Kenny said, feeling like a moron for trying too hard to impress her. “She needs her antihistamines.”

Jose looked at the face he barely recognized with the eyes swollen shut. Her nose ran as lines of clear mucus dripped onto her lips. Amelie sneezed so hard and her bladder let loose soaking her dark pants. She started to bawl like an overgrown child at the humiliation of it all.

“Dr. Bishop, do you have the allergy medicine with you?” Jose asked.

“No, my house,” she said to him, sneezing, coughing, and choking at the same time as she scrambled to get to her feet.

Jose didn’t ask another question, but lifted her into his arms, carrying her to the truck.
